Gempak Starz Licenses Makoto Shinkai's Weathering With You Novel

Malaysian publisher Gempak Starz announced on Tuesday that it has licensed Makoto Shinkai's novel adaptation of his own Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko) anime film. The novel will be available in both Malaysian and Chinese. Gempak Starz did not announce a release date for the novel.
The novel debuted in Japan on July 18, a day before the film's July 19 opening. The film opened in Malaysia on September 5.
The film sold 1,159,020 tickets for 1,643,809,400 yen (about US$15.22 million) in its first three days in 358 theaters in Japan. The film ranked #1 in its opening weekend. The film earned 28.6% more in its first three days compared to Shinkai's previous your name. film, which earned 1,277,960,000 yen (about US$12.51 million at the time) in its first three days.
The film has earned 12.1 billion yen (about US$113 million) as of Sunday, its 52nd day of screening in Japan. The film has sold 9 million tickets so far. A manga adaptation by Watari Kubota launched in Kodansha's Afternoon magazine on July 25.
