Witch Hat Atelier Manga's 5th Volume Bundles Original Card Game

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

The limited edition fifth volume of Kamome Shirahama's award-nominated manga Witch Hat Atelier bundles an original card game. The card game blends elements from the manga's story with rules from the card game "Love Letter."

The popular card game can be played with two to eight players. The goal is to deliver a love letter to a princess with the help of collaborators. Z-Man games has localized the card game in English and describes the game play.

In the wake of the arrest of Queen Marianna for high treason, none was more heartbroken than her daughter, Princess Annette. Suitors throughout the realm sought to ease Annette's sorrow by courting her, seeking to bring some joy into her life. You are one of these suitors, trying to get your love letter to the Princess. Unfortunately, she has locked herself in the palace, so you must rely on intermediaries to carry your message. During the game, you hold one secret card in your hand. This is who currently carries your message of love for the Princess. Make sure that the person closest to the Princess holds your love letter at the end of the day, so it reaches her first!

The Witch Hat Atelier version will include card artwork by Shirahama. This year's July issue of Kodansha's Morning two magazine will bundle extra cards that can be added to the set.

The fifth volume of Witch Hat Atelier will also include a postcard that readers can mail in pre-order the upcoming With Hat Atelier art book. Pre-orders can also be placed at the Kodansha Online store until July 31.

The 46th Angoulême International Comics Festival nominated Witch Hat Atelier for Best Youth Comic in January and last year's Kodansha Manga Awards nominated the series under its Best General Manga category.

Kodansha Comics publishes the manga in English and describes the story:

In a world where everyone takes wonders like magic spells and dragons for granted, Coco is a girl with a simple dream: she wants to be a witch. But everybody knows magicians are born, not made, and Coco was not born with a gift for magic. Resigned to her un-magical life, Coco is about to give up on her dream to become a witch… until the day she meets Qifrey, a mysterious, traveling magician. After secretly seeing Qifrey perform magic in a way she's never seen before, Coco soon learns what everybody “knows” might not be the truth, and discovers that her magical dream may not be as far away as it may seem…
