Dropout Idol Fruit Tart (TV)

Themes: yuri

Plot Summary: First-year high school student Ino Sakura heads to Tokyo to pursue becoming an idol. She teams up with fellow Nezumi Dorm residents — unpopular former child actor Roko, musician Hayu, and model Nina — to form the new idol unit Fruit Tart. These dropout idols get back on their feet and enter the world of show business to prevent their dorm from being demolished.

Last of the Fall shows that didn't have a thread. Never been big into idol shows or the concept of idols itself. But here ya' go!

Good work in creating these discussions, which will mean I will not flood the "What are you watching right now" topic in the Anime section, when I comment on pretty much everything I finish. Just watched episode 10.

Figures the show has a yuri theme. The central main character, Ino, is a full on lesbian who is not very shy about her interest in girls, and she seems to have two in particular other girls who somewhat creep on her, Hemo and Tone. Roko and Nina have also gotten quite touchy feely with each other.

I know that it is not the healthiest, but one of the gags that has actually managed to make me laugh was how Ino is either too dense or actually appreciative of a girl having a kind of creepy obsession with her that it did not bother her. Has felt like one of the more unique twist on a common theme.

But also talking about same sex attraction, despite Ino being very vocal in her interest, I found it very perplexing when her character had a different reaction to if a boy had an interest in her, where she blushed and made some comment of not being ready for marriage. Kind of felt like a weird element in line with a Japanese idea that same sex relations with girls is something like a phase done when young, that they eventually get over for a man. Kind of felt a bit gross if a representation, and also makes me think about there being a line between yuri and actual lesbians. Also granted back on the not entirely healthy thing, a lot of the girl interested in girl thing in this show has felt a bit predatory with characters being obsessive.

Yeah... Ino's not gay, she just has pink hair. Not to say that pink has to do with her sexuality but that her hair color is indicative of her bubbly personality and how she likes everyone. "Full on lesbian" is the sort of description I only apply after characters engage in sexual activity or basic foreplay of their own free will so I'd love the hear the reasoning. From what I saw, there's only one character that has lesbian tendencies in the group... Hemo, not even sure if I have to point her out... and one, maybe two more in the full cast.

When I came into this thread to talk about the show, I had no idea that would have to be my first topic. This is one of my favorite shows of the season, looking at the dark underbelly of the Idol industry and what it does to identities that used to be actual people.

It's the perfect antidote to how "clean" Love Live is. It's dirty, it's lewd, it's very honest but most of all, it's human. In episode 10,, they broke down which sort of audience each girl attracts and the show may have gotten a little honest and real. "Roko attracts young girls and old men." Yeah...

Ino couldn't stop talking about cute girls and would get giddy over the idea of attention from cute girls, yet your interpretation is that she is straight?

Seems a little off that for a character to be dubbed a lesbian they would have to be groping or making out with another girl.

My interpretation is she's an Idol candidate. But you described Ino as a "full on Lesbian" and "full" and "on" should include Full and ON.

My definitions: I would describe main character Marika from Bodacious Space Pirates as a likely lesbian while the trio of girls from Rinne: Flower of LaGrange are not likely... ok, TWO of them are not, third is "undeclared".... even though there's a scene where all three kiss. But for me to use a term like "full on Lesbian" we would have to start talking about series like Strawberry Panic where the concept isn't a side effect of an all female cast or because of vocation.

It's not ambiguous and it's not yuri baiting, it's just yuri. I swear we've had conversations like this before over shows like Girl in Twilight; There, the concept itself was under explored as I think it's fascinating that a character meets an alternate self that's gay and that character's reaction is just "well, she's gay but it has nothing to do with me" but then turns out, yeah it involved her as well.

To me, Ino comes off more as someone who just loves the attention and she can't and won't differentiate between attention from stalker Hemo and normal girl fans. That's one of the series' main sources of humor regarding Ino. That and her nervous peeing.

Episode 12 (finale)

Well, that looks like the end of Dropout Idol Fruit Tart. I do think that it is a bit of a strange beast in ways, like it is very forward by some of these girls are certainly attracted to other girls, is a little lewd with things like panties, it has a bit of fanservice parts. But in other ways is also just a cute show that wants to pretend things are innocent, that some of the girls are getting hot and bothered, and a good percentage of the cast are weirdly attached to a young looking girl. The show just kind of feels like on the cusp between a cgdct show, a slightly raunchy yuri show. I am kind of reminded of a show from I think a decade ago, Kanamemo.

I don't have complaints about all aesthetic elements of the show, I personally quite like when it does things like reduce the characters basic designs with little features, it can go a way to focus on just the comedy of the moment. It does go out of its way to just be a bit lighter in tone and easy to watch, although I imagine not everyone is going to have patience for everything. As I said, I do kind of like the twist on Ino's character not really minding too much when she has too much attention from her a bit too into her fans. Although, it does at times feel like there is inconsistency in her character, where Ino can let it slip that she herself can be a bit of a pervert, and then does not recognise when it is done to her.

The show is fun, maybe not always in a way that steels attention, but I would not say I got bored. My rating is Decent (6/10). But I was also up for some yuri content, which did not leave me as conflicted over the themes as Assault Lily Bouquet that I think does it a bit more seriously, or the tease of the slow moving Adachi and Shimamura.
